Since Facebook is a private company, there's no way to truly know what it's worth. But one benchmark sometimes used is the "implied valuation" of the company based on sales at Sharespost, a private stock market.
On Jan. 6, an investor bought Facebook shares at Sharespost for $55 a share – suggesting a value for the whole company of a whopping $124.7 billion. As recently as six months ago, the implied valuation of Facebook hovered around $30 billion.
If accurate, this latest valuation means that Facebook is more valuable than Amazon ($83.4 billion) and Yahoo ($22.2 billion) combined.
Google, with a market value of $196.2 billion, is looking over its shoulder.
